Our Story
In 1999, our Founder, Holly Sutter traveled to Pakistan and India and experienced hundreds of cups of various chais over a five year span. Years later, when she was taught an authentic masala chai technique embedded in a Thai Buddhist Medicine lineage, she realized this ancient formula was on the verge of being lost to modernization.
Masala Wala Chai utilizes this centuries old chai preparation, and is long simmered with whole spices, including fresh organic ginger and turmeric root. The end result is a chai infused with a therapeutic dose of spices. Chai prepared in the East utilizes whole milk, and is merged into the preparation via a slow simmer, making it highly digestable and bioavailable.
Masala Wala Chai made its first appearance alongside Holly’s private catering events, and was often sent home with her bodywork clients. As her friends and family offered feedback, Holly realized the potential impact authentic chai contained.
Holly is on a mission to enliven a centuries old tradition, while transcending it to offer it to a larger audience. We hope you get to experience the rich complexity that is Masala Wala Chai!
